Candida auris spreads across multiple U.S. states

New Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data show the drug-resistant fungus Candida auris continues to spread in 2026, with nearly half of U.S. states reporting cases. Texas had more than 700 known cases by mid-July, and Michigan reported 503. First identified in the U.S. in 2016, some strains resist all standard antifungal medications. The fungus survives long on surfaces and spreads via catheters, breathing tubes and IVs, making outbreaks in health care settings especially dangerous; a review found 88% of clinical cases were in people over 45 and most occurred in acute care.
