Malaysia declares emergency in Serian over hazardous haze
Malaysia declared an emergency in the Serian district of Sarawak after thick haze from forest fires on the Indonesian side of Borneo raised the air pollution index to 519, above the 500 emergency threshold and well past the 300 hazardous level. The declaration, issued by King Sultan Ibrahim after advice from prime minister Anwar Ibrahim and Sarawak premier Abang Johari Openg, is meant to let authorities respond to health and safety risks. Officials are carrying out cloud-seeding operations to try to bring rain, and the emergency covers roughly a 20-kilometre radius while essential services remain open.
