Shakira pledges to rebuild schools and university in Chocó
Colombian singer Shakira visited Quibdó and pledged to rebuild at least 10 schools and restore a local technological university after the Aug. 10, 7.4 magnitude earthquake that struck western Colombia. The quake killed at least 287 people, destroyed more than 26,000 dwellings and affected thousands of educational sites; regional reports say over 265 educational sites and about 3,100 homes were destroyed in Chocó. Shakira said she will work with the Howard G. Buffett Foundation and her Fundación Pies Descalzos, and announced pledges of $500,000 each from the FIFA Global Citizen Education Fund and Live Nation and $250,000 from CAF toward reconstruction.
