Massimiliano Gioni named director of the New Museum

The New Museum announced that Massimiliano Gioni, its artistic director since 2014, will become president and director on Aug. 1 following an eight-month international search that concluded the best candidate was internal. The appointment comes as the museum reopened an expanded Bowery facility with twice the gallery space and a major reopening show staged by Gioni. He will retain programming oversight, continue occasional international shows, and has no immediate plan to appoint a chief curator. The museum faces short-term tasks including rebuilding attendance after closure and managing past labor and financial challenges while sustaining experimental exhibitions.
