OECD finds falling PISA scores in reading and maths
The OECD's 2025 PISA results show a broad drop in performance among 15-year-olds across many wealthy countries and other participants. Average reading scores across OECD countries fell 28 points from 2015 to 2025, and mathematics scores declined 22 points, equivalent to roughly one-and-a-half and just over one years of learning respectively. The assessment covered more than 760,000 students in 91 countries and economies and found one in five OECD 15-year-olds now low performers in all three subjects. The report also highlighted large socio-economic gaps and rising classroom use of AI, which correlated with better outcomes only when students received guidance.
