Nigeria to give students free daily educational data
The federal government and the Nigerian Communications Commission, working with mobile network operators, ALTON and the education ministry, will provide public senior secondary and tertiary students with 100MB of zero-rated daily data from October 1, 2026, to access NCC- and ministry-approved educational websites and platforms. The framework lists eligible resources such as learning management systems, digital libraries and teacher development platforms, requires compliance with cybersecurity, child protection and data-protection rules, and includes net neutrality and competition safeguards; rollout will initially target public institutions before wider extension.
Students will receive 100MB of zero-rated daily educational data.
Context
High internet costs limit student access to online learning. The government and NCC designed a zero-rated framework to reduce that barrier. The programme will start on October 1, 2026, and may extend to other learners later.
