Manitoba premier defends parental opt-outs from updated health curriculum
Manitoba announced a voluntary pilot in more than 100 schools this fall to review and update the kindergarten-to-Grade 12 phys-ed and health curriculum, with mandatory implementation scheduled for September 2028. The premier said parents will continue to be able to opt children out of specific lessons and provide alternative material, while the new curriculum adds topics such as setting boundaries in relationships, identifying online luring tactics and linking exercise, nutrition and mental health. The pilot has drawn both support from teachers and students and criticism, including an online petition with more than 13,200 signatures.
