Labour funds teacher pay rise to avert England strikes
The Labour government announced additional funding for the teachers' pay award after the School Teachers Pay Review Body recommended increases of 3.5 percent this year and 3 percent next September. Ministers said they would back the award with £700 million in 2026–27 and £1.1 billion in 2027–28, drawing on a Local Government Pension Scheme surplus to cover much of an identified £460 million shortfall in state school budgets. The NEU welcomed the move but warned it does not guarantee equal savings across schools and that the first 1 percent rise must still be found through efficiency savings.
