DOJ says Berkeley Law favored Black applicants
The Justice Department and Department of Education concluded that the University of California, Berkeley, School of Law violated Title VI by showing bias in favor of Black applicants and against Asian and White applicants. The agencies opened a compliance review in March 2025 and cited that Black applicants had 5.8 times higher odds of admission than comparable white applicants in 2025, plus LSAT and admitted-score disparities in 2024–2025. Median LSAT admits from 2021–2025 showed Black admits near 165 versus about 172 for Asian and White admits. Berkeley Law rejects the findings and says it does not consider race in admissions and follows Proposition 209 and federal law.
