Nigeria public debt rises to N166.79 trillion
Nigeria's total public debt climbed by N7.44 trillion in the second quarter of 2026 to N166.79 trillion, the Debt Management Office reported, up from N159.35 trillion at March end. Domestic debt accounted for N91.59 trillion or 54.91 percent of the total, while external obligations converted at the June 30 exchange rate totalled $54.52 billion. The federal government holds the bulk of liabilities (about N152.77 trillion) and federal government bonds dominate the domestic portfolio, with N64.84 trillion in outstanding bonds and N19.48 trillion in treasury bills. The increase continues a sharp rise since June 2023.
