EU presses China for trade concessions after commission call
European Commission officials increased pressure on China after a one-hour video call between Trade Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič and Chinese counterpart Wang Wentao, seeking concrete commitments to rebalance trade and secure market access. The EU executive highlighted a widening trade deficit with China of about €1 billion a day and set October’s Trade and Investment Council meeting in Beijing as a deadline for tangible outcomes. Talks focused on market access and Chinese export controls on rare earths, which China dominates and which are essential to EU green, defence and automotive industries.
