Poland seeks permanent US base in talks with Washington
Poland, which borders Ukraine and Russia, is holding talks with Washington on whether to establish a permanent American base on its territory, Warsaw's deputy defense minister said. Almost 10,000 US soldiers are already stationed in Poland, almost exclusively on a rotational basis. The discussions come as the United States launches a formal review of its military presence in Europe aimed at shifting primary responsibility for conventional defense to Europe. Poland allocates about 5 percent of GDP to defense and has exchanged preliminary, not-yet-official proposals with an American team named as its partner in the talks.
