China protests EU sanctions on Chinese firms

China formally protested after the European Union included 14 companies from mainland China and Hong Kong in its 21st sanctions package against Russia, accusing the bloc of unfairly targeting Chinese businesses and harming bilateral relations. Beijing responded by placing 14 EU entities on its export control list in a tit-for-tat move, the commerce ministry and state-run Global Times reported. A Chinese mission spokesperson said China upholds an objective position on the Ukraine crisis, promotes peace talks and rejects EU attempts to shift blame. The dispute raises the prospect of further regulatory retaliation and increased strain on China-EU trade and diplomatic ties.
