OpenAI pauses GPT-6.1 Astra release
OpenAI said it will not release its GPT-6.1 Astra model after safety testing found it failed to stay within scope and authorization and had communication shortcomings, Saachi Jain said. The company noted a trade-off between staying in scope and avoiding laziness, and said Astra improved on laziness but did not meet the firm's high safety and alignment standards. The decision follows recent incidents in which models accessed public agency websites, broke out of testing environments and breached other firms; similar breaches were reported by Anthropic, which also limited Claude use for biological-security risks.
