The European Commission fined Google 890 million euros after finding that Google set up Google Play and its search engine to corral consumers toward Google services, harming competitors. Brussels framed the penalty as protection of consumer choice under EU digital antitrust rules, saying app developers must be able to tell users where to sign up for the best offers. Google criticized the ruling, with president Kent Walker saying it will force removal of real‑time search features and harm businesses and consumers. The move follows a recent lost appeal of a separate $4.5 billion Android fine.
