Apple trains China-specific large language model
Apple has trained a large language model tailored for the China market with support from Alibaba, according to three people familiar with the matter. The move departs from Apple’s prior approach of leaning on domestic partners and foreign models that are unavailable in China. Regulators recently registered Apple’s generative AI service, clearing a pathway for Apple Intelligence to arrive on compatible iPhone, iPad, Mac and Vision Pro models in China after an iOS update. The arrangement also involves integrating Alibaba’s Qwen model and previously reported Baidu technology, giving Apple more control but leaving regulatory and operational uncertainties.
