UIL requires WBGT for outdoor athletics

4 min read

The University Interscholastic League has made Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) measurements mandatory for all outdoor athletics starting Aug. 1, shifting from prior recommendations approved in 2023. WBGT measures heat stress using temperature, humidity, wind speed, sun angle and cloud coverage. The UIL prescribes action thresholds: at 82.0–86.9 provide three rest breaks per hour and an onsite rapid cooling zone; at 87.0–90.0 limit practice to two hours with four rest breaks and gear limits; at 90.1–92.0 limit practice to one hour with enforced rest and no football equipment; above 92.1 prohibit outdoor workouts. Readings must be taken within 15 minutes before practice.

WBGT use is mandatory for all outdoor athletics from August 1.
