More than a kilometer underground at the Sanford Underground Research Facility, a liquid xenon detector recorded a single unexplained recoil of a xenon nucleus during 220 days of observation between 2023 and 2024. The team has ruled out known backgrounds so far, published a preprint and presented the result at the 2026 TeV Particle Astrophysics Conference, but they do not claim a discovery. Under WIMP models the event would imply a particle mass near 200 times a proton.
