Small asteroid disintegrates over Indian Ocean
On Sept. 6 a small asteroid designated 2026 RW1, about 0.8 meters (2.6 feet) across, entered Earth's atmosphere and burned up safely over the Indian Ocean near northwestern Australia. Astronomers identified the object before impact — only the 13th known pre-impact detection — following observations by the Mt. Lemmon Survey, Catalina Sky Survey and Pan-STARRS, and trajectory calculations by NASA's CNEOS; ESA planetary defense lead Richard Moissl announced the predicted entry time. NASA said the rock posed no hazard and that the event provided a valuable test to validate detection networks and refine impact prediction procedures.
