El Niño strengthening could bring heavier winter rain, flooding
Federal forecasters and NOAA's Climate Prediction Center report a high likelihood that El Niño will strengthen through year-end, with the CPC giving a 75 percent chance it reaches historic strength in October–December and federal agencies saying a greater than 90 percent chance it will be very strong in fall and winter. AccuWeather expert Paul Pastelok warned major cities from Los Angeles to Atlanta could see heavier rainfall, flooding and landslides, while CPC winter outlook maps favor above-normal temperatures across much of the country and wetter-than-normal precipitation from Southern California through the Gulf Coast and parts of the East Coast.
