BepiColombo begins Mercury arrival to test Moon origin theory
BepiColombo, a European and Japanese mission, has begun its arrival phase at Mercury after eight years of travel and will enter orbit in November. The twin-orbiter spacecraft carries instruments to map Mercury's mineral and elemental composition at higher resolution, seek water, and assess geological activity and the planet's magnetic field. Scientists hope composition data will test hypotheses that Mercury lost most of its lighter crust in ancient impacts and that some of that material could have formed the Moon or been transferred to Earth and Venus. Results could change models of planet formation.
