Supreme Court allows use of federal SAVE voter database
The Supreme Court on Friday lifted a lower-court restriction and allowed states to use the Department of Homeland Security’s Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements (SAVE) program to verify voter eligibility, in a temporary emergency order. The three liberal justices dissented, warning of privacy risks and wrongful removals. A D.C. district judge had previously blocked the expanded SAVE program, citing privacy and error risks, and an appeals court had left that block in place. States’ use is voluntary and near-term purges are limited by a 90-day rule, but plaintiffs say they will continue legal challenges.
