Russia declares new Arctic shipping era as Chinese ship docks
Russian foreign minister Sergey Lavrov announced what he called a "new era of Arctic shipping" after a Chinese container ship arrived at Murmansk via the Northern Sea Route on 19 August. In an article on Arctic.ru he framed the event as the start of a new phase for a region he said contributes at least 10 percent of Russia's GDP and houses over 2.5 million people. Lavrov highlighted cooperation with China, India and other partners, named NATO military moves as the main security threat, said the Arctic Council has been frozen since March 2022, and said Russia will press on with resource, transport, tourism and research development.
