Ji announces nationwide highway blockade over petroleum levy

Jamaat-i-Islami Pakistan (JI) emir Hafiz Naeemur Rehman announced a nationwide highway blockade and sit-ins on Aug 7 as part of the party's second-phase campaign against a petroleum and carbon levy introduced on June 14 under an IMF commitment. The JI is demanding immediate abolition of the petroleum levy, cancellation of expensive independent power producer (IPP) contracts, and steps to curb inflation and power outages. The party plans 20,000 corner meetings, will allow only ambulances to pass during blockades, and warned that suppression could escalate the campaign into a movement against the government.

JI will blockade highways nationwide on Aug 7 over the petroleum levy
