World's first iPS-derived heart cell sheet transplanted in Japan
A myocardial cell sheet called RiHeart, created from induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells by Cuorips Inc., was transplanted Sept. 29 into a woman in her 50s with severe ischemic cardiomyopathy at Osaka Keisatsu Hospital. The sheet is designed to secrete substances that regenerate blood vessels and is expected to improve or maintain exercise capacity and cardiac function. RiHeart received conditional, deadline-based approval in March and is covered under public health insurance, but its efficacy was inferred from eight-patient trials and Cuorips must complete further studies on 75 patients within seven years for full approval.
