WHO South-East Asia region commits to stronger action to end tuberculosis
Member states at the WHO South-East Asia regional meeting committed to integrated action to close tuberculosis care gaps, prioritizing early diagnosis, wider use of WHO-recommended rapid diagnostics, preventive treatment and preparedness for new vaccines. The region accounted for about 3.68 million cases and roughly 433,000 deaths in 2024, including some 150,000 multidrug- and rifampicin-resistant cases and about 34% of global new cases. Modelling suggests introducing a TB vaccine from 2028 alongside diagnostics, prevention and treatment could avert about 1.45 million cases and 300,000 deaths by 2030, but a large funding gap remains.
