Turkey fines doctors for caesarean sections

3 min read

Turkey’s health ministry has fined, suspended and ordered training for more than 100 obstetrician-gynaecologists after concerns about high caesarean rates, according to local reporting and medical associations. The country had about 615 caesareans per 1,000 live births in 2023, the highest among OECD nations in the latest data. Authorities are enforcing rules amid President Erdogan’s 2025 “Decade of the Family” campaign and an April 2025 ban on elective caesareans at private facilities. Medical groups and doctors say caesareans are quicker and reduce legal risk for staff, and warn penalties do not address structural health system problems.
