Meta appeals verdict in social media addiction lawsuit
3 min read
Meta has filed a notice of appeal in Los Angeles County Superior Court after a jury found that Meta and Google-owned YouTube were negligent and substantially contributed to harm to a 20-year-old woman identified as KGM or Kaley. The jury awarded $3 million in damages and recommended $3 million in punitive damages. Both companies sought post-trial relief that was denied by Judge Carolyn B. Kuhl, and both plan appeals. The plaintiffs targeted platform design features such as infinite scroll and autoplay to get around Section 230 protections, and a separate New Mexico jury also recently found Meta liable.
Meta appealed after a jury found its design caused user harm.
