Brad Bird previews Ray Gunn, Netflix schedules release

Brad Bird’s long-gestating project Ray Gunn will stream on Netflix on December 18, and Bird screened the film’s first seven minutes at a Hall H panel at San Diego Comic-Con. The cold open follows private detective Ray (Sam Rockwell) and his alien sidekick Eye-ra (Tom Waits) as they break into a high-rise, photograph secret documents, and fight a multi-armed alien named Vanzine; the footage includes an almost 800-floor super elevator and Eye-ra’s one-eyed, spider-legged design. The sequence establishes a methodical, detective tone rather than a clear children’s movie, and the full release will determine audience and critical reception.
