Louisiana expands Pell grants to workforce training

Beginning July 1, the federal Pell Grant program was expanded to cover short-term workforce training, and Louisiana students will be eligible for grants averaging $2,200 for eight- to 15-week programs in high-demand fields such as carpentry, construction, plumbing and heating and air conditioning service. The state approved qualifying programs and students must meet traditional Pell requirements using the FAFSA. Participating schools face stringent rules, including a 70% credential completion rate and proof of job placement within months, which may challenge program eligibility and state tracking efforts.
