Government launches vocational GCSEs and national work experience mission
The government announced a major reform to technical education that creates nationally set vocational GCSEs to replace variable Technical Awards and will be regulated by Ofqual to ensure parity with traditional GCSEs. The move links new qualifications to T Levels, V Levels and A Levels, with new pathways starting in September 2028 and some subjects available from September 2029. Alongside this, a National Mission on Work Experience asks employers to provide an additional 200,000 placements for 14–16 year olds, with No10 North also offering placements, aiming to improve progression into work and address youth disengagement.
