Florida requires colleges to adopt artificial intelligence policies
The Florida Department of Education has proposed a rule that would require all 28 institutions in the Florida College System to adopt policies governing artificial intelligence use by students, staff and guests, covering academic integrity, course assignments and grading. The proposal defines AI and AI instructional tools while excluding tools designed to meet a student’s social needs, and it directs K-12 districts to add AI rules, notify parents when tools are approved and allow opt-outs, with extra review for PreK-5. Education commissioner Henry Mack approved the rule for consideration by the State Board on Sept. 16. The move comes amid a failed state AI bill and a Florida lawsuit against OpenAI.
