Tether buys majority of South American farmland
Tether expanded its reserve mix by acquiring roughly 70% of Adecoagro, a Nasdaq-listed agribusiness, bringing total farmland spending to about $600 million after an initial $100 million stake in 2024. The company keeps large holdings of gold, bitcoin and roughly $141 billion in US Treasuries, and says the assets hedge against dollar debasement; it also plans to use the farmland's renewable energy to power Bitcoin mining. KPMG issued a full audit saying reserves exceeded liabilities by $6.8 billion at end-2025, but Tether's June attestation showed the buffer at $4.1 billion, a roughly 40% decline largely from unrealized losses.
Tether's reserve buffer fell about 40% in six months.
