Thomas Goldstein to be sentenced for poker-related crimes

Thomas Goldstein, a prominent Washington appellate lawyer who argued more than 40 cases before the U.S. Supreme Court, will be sentenced on July 24 after a jury convicted him in February of failing to report millions in poker winnings, lying on mortgage loan documents and making improper payments through his former law firm. The six-week trial revealed his global high-stakes poker play and included testimony from Tobey Maguire. Prosecutors asked for more than eight years in prison and $3.1 million in restitution, while defense lawyers urged supervised release to address gambling addiction and repay debts.
