ICC terminates case after prosecutors withdraw charges against Banda

Judges at the International Criminal Court terminated proceedings against Abdallah Banda after prosecutors withdrew charges that had accused him of war crimes for a 2007 attack on African Union peacekeepers. The prosecution said evidence had deteriorated since the charges were confirmed in 2011 and that there were no longer substantial grounds for belief in Banda's responsibility. The judges noted the withdrawal does not bar prosecutors from filing a similar case later. The decision comes against the long-running Darfur conflict backdrop, a 2005 UN Security Council referral, and renewed fighting in Sudan since 2023.
