Former officer extradited from China to face U.S. charges

Dan Hiers Jr., 53, a former Charleston police officer who disappeared in 2005 after being accused of sexual misconduct with a minor and after his wife was found dead, has been returned to South Carolina following a lengthy international investigation, the U.S. Marshals Service said. Hiers was previously arrested in Shanghai in 2018 while living under the alias David Williams, and his case was featured on national fugitive programs and the U.S. Marshals' 15 Most Wanted list. The extradition involved Chinese and U.S. law enforcement partners and clears the way for prosecution on the original charges.

A fugitive ex-officer was extradited to face murder and sex charges.
