Meta will invest C$13 billion to build a 1-gigawatt AI data center in Sturgeon County, Alberta, its first facility in Canada and its 33rd globally. The center is expected to use electricity roughly equivalent to 800,000 homes and will employ closed-loop liquid cooling to limit water use, reportedly using less water than a typical golf course. Meta plans to offset power needs with clean and renewable projects, while a long-term agreement with Pembina Pipeline ties the build to the planned Greenlight natural gas plant, which is expected to start in late 2030 and require about 150 million cubic feet of gas per day.
