JERA to build hyperscale AI data center at Chiba plant
JERA, Dell Technologies and UK developer RHAELM announced a memorandum to build a hyperscale AI data center next to JERA's Chiba thermal power station, with Apollo Global Management as strategic investor and financier for the first site. The project is expected to cost more than $15 billion, be sized for up to 400 megawatts, and aim for phased operations around 2028 and full capacity in 2029. JERA will supply power under a 15- to 25-year contract and partners said they hope to replicate the model at other JERA sites to reach multi-gigawatt AI capacity by the 2030s.
