China opens Pinglu Canal for shipping
The Pinglu Canal will open for shipping on Sept 16, running 134.2 kilometers from the Xijiang River to the Beibu Gulf and designed for vessels up to 5,000 metric tons, officials said. The project has an estimated investment of 72.7 billion yuan and is expected to cut inland shipping distances by over 560 km, lower logistics costs by 18–30 percent and save society more than 5 billion yuan annually. Construction engaged more than 70,000 local workers who received about 2.6 billion yuan, and authorities completed resettlement housing, schools, water pipelines, navigation trials and an online river‑sea dispatch platform.
