An international study published in Science and involving researchers including Pau Carnicero analysed vegetation on 62 European summits four times between 2001 and 2022 under the GLORIA initiative. The data show total species numbers on summits have increased, yet the percentage of species not re-detected rose with each survey and these losses disproportionately affected high-mountain specialist plants. Local extinctions were strongest where warming was most intense and near species' lower altitudinal limits. Authors warn this pattern may reflect an extinction debt from past warming, and they call for further research to confirm long-term outcomes.
