Italy and Spain have each extended temporary border checks by another 15 days after a late July surge that saw more than 72,000 migrants enter Spain's Ceuta from Morocco. Italy said it kept random police checks at airports and seaports because high risks to internal security persist and cited a potential terrorist infiltration threat, and it notified the EU and other governments. Spain said it extended reciprocal measures because Italy's original controls remain in place. The extensions sustain a dispute over migration policy, keep Schengen internal controls active and prolong a humanitarian situation in Ceuta.
