Exam data show Knowsley recorded only 8% of GCSE results at grade 7 or above in the latest academic year, the lowest rate of any English council area. Nearby Halton recorded 11%, Liverpool 17% and Sefton 16.5%, while the north west averaged 19% and London regions recorded much higher rates, including 72% in the city of London and 39.7% in Trafford. Knowsley is also the only English council area without A-level provision since Halewood Academy sixth form closed in 2017, meaning many students go elsewhere for post-16 study.
Only 8% of Knowsley GCSE entries were grade 7 or higher.
