The New York Times reports that Iran and Oman are close to a pact on the Strait of Hormuz that would reopen the waterway while giving Iran unprecedented control over ships entering the Persian Gulf. Under the described terms, inbound vessels would cross a route close to Iran’s coast controlled by the Islamic Republic and would be required to pay service fees, with revenue split equally between Iran and Oman, while outbound ships would use a route close to Oman. A United States official disputed Iran's description, saying temporary routes would not need Iranian approval or tolls, and the strait had been a free international waterway before the recent war.
