Oman proposes joint mechanism to manage Strait of Hormuz

Oman has presented a proposal to Iran for a jointly run regional mechanism to manage the Strait of Hormuz, backed by other Gulf states, that would use voluntary fees to fund navigation, environmental protection and search and rescue. The plan, modeled on the Strait of Malacca, says Iran would not exercise sole control of the waterway. The U.S. abruptly suspended a campaign of air strikes and President Donald Trump said talks with Iran were progressing, raising hopes shipping might resume, while Iran's foreign minister discussed the issue with Omani and Saudi counterparts.
