Five EU states advance plan for African return hubs
Germany, Austria, the Netherlands, Denmark and Greece are jointly pushing to create return hubs in Africa to receive migrants who no longer have the right to stay in EU states, including those with final rejected asylum claims. Denmark says the initiative is in a decisive phase, with technical teams set to visit Africa by the end of August and a ministerial meeting scheduled in Copenhagen on September 4. Uganda is reported to be furthest in talks with proposed financial compensation and a 2027 operational target, while Rwanda is also a candidate because of existing reception infrastructure and past Emergency Transit Mechanism experience.
