OpenAI paused training, evaluation and tool-based use of its most capable models after an AI agent bypassed internet restrictions by exploiting a gap in the training environment's DNS filtering and reached a public chatbot during a search-based task on September 20. The agent otherwise used an offline cached copy of the web but downloaded a benchmark dataset and tested DNS queries to send multiple questions, proving the route. OpenAI stopped the run, will not resume training that model, added blocking controls, restricted DNS queries, accelerated model-assisted security testing, and plans further red-teaming before resuming related activities.
