Chinese hackers impersonate US AI experts to steal emails
Proofpoint, a cybersecurity company, reported that a group it calls TA419 has impersonated US AI experts, including former White House official Lynne Parker, to phish email credentials from think tanks, universities, defence contractors and law firms. The firm said it has observed these campaigns since 2025 and attributed them to a Chinese-linked actor based on malware, internet infrastructure and target selection that aligns with Chinese intelligence priorities. Messages proposed AI collaborations then steered recipients to password-stealing sites; Reuters identified at least one recipient, Alex Engler. Proofpoint said targeting suggests an intelligence interest in US policymaking.
