UN leaders adopt declaration on sea level rise
The UN General Assembly approved the UN Declaration on Sea Level Rise by consensus, creating the first UN-wide political framework focused on legal, humanitarian and development consequences. The declaration urges stronger international cooperation, faster emissions reductions, more adaptation and resilience financing, and increased support for small island developing states and low-lying countries. The UN secretary-general reported a nearly six millimetre sea-level rise in 2024 and warned of about one metre by century end without deep emissions cuts. The International Law Commission and international courts have clarified some legal points, but relocation, nationality and compensation issues remain unresolved.
