Researchers identify new wild cat species in Bolivia
Researchers have identified a previously unknown small wild cat species, the tilcayo (Leopardus tilcayo), from Bolivia's cloud forests after examining a house pet named Tigrino and comparing genomes. By analyzing complete genomes from 38 Leopardus members, scientists concluded the tilcayo diverged from its closest relatives about 1.4 million years ago, and called it the first entirely new feline species since the pampas cat in 1923. Little is known about wild populations, diet or reproduction, but the discovery could affect conservation assessments because deforestation and the illegal pet trade threaten tiger cats.
