India launches GISAT-1A geosynchronous imaging satellite
India successfully launched GISAT-1A (EOS-05) into geosynchronous orbit aboard a GSLV Mk II from Sriharikota, recovering from the 2021 GISAT-1 (EOS-03) failure when the cryogenic upper stage did not ignite. Positioned about 36,000 kilometres above the subcontinent, GISAT-1A can capture sector-specific images every five minutes and full-India coverage roughly every 30 minutes at spatial resolutions in the tens of metres, offering near-real-time monitoring for disaster response, agriculture, oceanography and security. The satellite complements India’s LEO fleet and links to a planned 52-satellite military constellation with increased private-sector participation under Space Policy 2026.
